all about danielle, abroad, & "danielle abroad"

Oh, hello! Bonjour and hola, too. I'm Danielle E. Alvarez, a young 30-something based in SF.

I began this blog as a sophomore at Syracuse University. Then I took it along as I studied in Santiago, Chile and Strasbourg, France, lived in a sorority house, graduated from college, road-tripped solo across the U.S., backpacked through Central America, worked in online publishing in New York, moved to Paris to pursue a Master's, and then, landed in Los Angeles upon my American return. Now, nearly 12 years later (half of which were spent abroad—note blog title above), I'm weaving it all together to build a life in Northern California.

Clearly my blog and I enjoy adventures.

What began as a platform for healthy food around the world has developed into a passionate collection of musings on art, food, wine, travel, life, and love.
I get a little personal in hopes that danielle abroad is both inspiring and entertaining. Please check out my blog's disclosure, if you'd like, and keep in touch by email, tweet, or Instagram. It'd be lovely to hear from you.

  1. Hey there! I've been following your blog for quite sometime and I love it; always interesting to hear about students studying abroad. I nominated your blog for a Liebster Award, check it out :)

  3. I found you through Toronto Girl West and I've just been poking about. Love what I've read so far. If you ever make it to Tanzania, drop me a line. I used to live there and love to suggest travel ideas :) I also used to live in Switzerland if you head there some day. (Also, just a small correction, the fourth Swiss language is Romansh, not Romanian. Two different languages.)

    Cheers,
    Andrea

  5. Hi Danielle! I'm completely in awe of your travels and commitment to blogging! Keeping up with blogging for five years is practically forever in blogger years! I'm going on 2.5, but I've taken plenty of extended breaks in that time, too. You're going to be my new motivation to keep writing even when I feel tired of it!

    1. Thanks, Sarah! I'm definitely hooked, but I doubt I'll be blogging for the rest of my (hopefully travel-rich) life ;)

  6. Any tips on how to move to Paris? My husband and I want to move there next year. We are Americans living in Thailand. I am contemplating another Masters purely for a visa (and citizenship). Do you know if my husband can get a work visa if I have a student visa?

    1. Hi Chloé, I wish I could help you more! Unfortunately, I don't think your husband is granted automatic rights to work but he can certainly apply for them. There were several married women in my program and they found a way to make it work with their just as Parisian-based husbands. Bon courage !
