Phew. January 2012 was a challenge. I lost quite a few more things than I 'd bargained for, and a very special person, too. And so, I'm looking forward to starting fresh in February. Perhaps because we're conditioned to look at each year, month, week, my gosh, even each day as a new beginning and a clean slate.

I believe in this optimistic view to a degree, but I also know from experience that, sometimes, you only do get one single opportunity to take a life-changing chance. For me, studying abroad was just that. I think many others would agree.

The plate you see above was my first official "study abroad" meal. With scrambled eggs, yogurt, zucchini bread, and fresh fruit, it was hardly an exotic breakfast. But the cuy that followed, in addition to cochayuyo, these shellfish, endive, and tarte flambée would all still be foreign had I not been so deliciously introduced.

Of course, in the end, it was never actually about the food. It was about living in a country I wasn't familiar with, with a family that wasn't my own, and spending time with peers who were all but strangers until we became friends. Then doing it all over again, and again.

It was about building relationships with people who grew up in completely different environments than the one I myself was raised in, and discovering that we had nearly everything in common when it came that which mattered.

It was about seeing amazing ruins of historical significance with my own eyes.

It was about finding a home in not one, not two, but three cities across the globe.

It was about camping in national parks, climbing volcanos, and surfing deserts.

It was about being a minority as American and a native English speaker. It was about adopting a new culture as I became somewhat multilingual.

It was about visiting my aunt's beloved Spanish city, the land my grandfather's parents came from, my neighbors' the home country; reuniting with ma soeur.

Most college students aren't required to study abroad. Yet according to the Institute of International Education, more are doing so anyway. We have our entire lives to travel, (and we should, often), but studying abroad is a unique experience that has the power to transform us from pampered young adults to cultured global citizens.

It obviously doesn't always have such magical effects, but it most certainly can if you let it. You simply have to be open with the world and patient with yourself.

I will forever be grateful I decided to study abroad for a year--I actually made it happen, in spite of seemingly countless fears and doubts. I gained a clear sense of independence, self-sufficiency, and self-trust. I matured, I played, I flourished in ways I didn't know were possible. And if you are given the opportunity to study abroad, (my brother is currently applying to spend a semester in the third most popular destination), with all my heart I hope you'll take it.

It's terrifying to willingly place ourselves into uncomfortable, challenging, and risky situations. It's much easier to avoid them all together. But don't. Study abroad anyway. Let yourself have the international experience of a lifetime.

My great grandmother peacefully passed away yesterday morning at the age of 96. She was quite the woman--feisty and sarcastic, clever to the point that she became manipulative, and benevolent in every which way. She was my maternal grandmother's mother. She was born in Bogotá, Colombia, then lived in various cities in the U.S. including: Miami, New York, and Orlando. She outlived her husband (whom I had the privilege of knowing as well) by almost two decades.

Her life wasn't easy, but it was full. And I am so grateful to have the chance to know her. This weekend, I will spend my time at home instead of in Syracuse as planned. I will honor her life surrounded by family, some cousins of which I haven't seen in at least a dozen years. I will have more than my fair share of desserts; that beautiful woman you see above had a sweet tooth unlike any other. And later this year, I will go to Colombia for the first time, just as I'd hoped.

Today, I... wrote a freelance article, filed my taxes, cleaned the bathroom, fact-checked, a lot, and made myself dinner. I also took a break to play Just Dance 3.

In the past month, I've already celebrated three birthdays, and there are many more to go. Many of my friends are turning 24. And despite the fact that 24 is the same age I will be in just five short months, it sounds old. I thought I'd have more things figured out at 24, that I'd actually know what I was doing, and that I'd be a lot more secure in my "adult" life. I highly doubt I will be. But I've realized that I was wrong to assume such things anyway. I was talking to my friend Steph (pictured above) about it. Sure, I'm still somewhat naive ~~and I have a blast playing games targeting 15-year-olds~~, but I am aware of what direction I am and want to be headed in, professionally and personally. I'm more secure in my beliefs than I ever have been and I take full responsibility for taking care of myself. No matter how young or old I am, I'd say we all strive to accomplish the above at any age.

Tomorrow I might be celebrating another friend's birthday with plenty of cocktails and dancing. Yet I know that I'll also be thoroughly enjoying her (hopefully chocolate-based) birthday dessert beforehand just as much, like I always have. Happy weekend, darlings. Oh! And happy national chocolate cake day, too.

pinterested, are we?

For Christmas this past year, I received something I'd been hoping for for quite a while: an invitation to Pinterest. Since then, I've become nothing short of obsessed. It's just so... beautiful (and you know how much I enjoy indulging myself with such sights.) I hesitated to join Twitter, I'm still resisting FourSquare, but I love using my virtual pinboard to organize and share gorgeous inspiration when it comes to things I'm most passionate about. It's no wonder, I've always appreciated scrapbooks and collages so much more than most.

Because I'm not always traveling, it's nice to have not just a list, but a visual reminder of the places I'd like to visit in the future. Seeing them in their unique splendor satisfies me now, and excites me for the amazing experiences to come.

Being as I'm hardly a chef, having a place to compile the wonderful recipes I come across daily is essential. Next up: banana bread pancakes, chickpea & feta salad, baked eggs with leeks, lentil meatballs, and chocolate mousse.

Since I never did become that interior designer, it's such a treat to collect snapshots of rooms and decór I'd love to surround myself with someday. This dream home of mine will be complete with a home office like this, bookshelves galore, a huge, welcoming kitchen, and a stylish, comfy bed.

I am an artist at heart. I could live in an art museum and I really can't wait for the day when I will be able to purchase paintings of my own. Until that time, I'm thoroughly enjoying collecting these lovely prints in unexpected combinations.

With my creative passions in mind, it should be no surprise that fashion appeals to me, too. Just because I don't go shopping often, doesn't mean I don't look for fresh outfit and accessory ideas. And yes, it is also serves as a closest wish list.

Though I've never been the kind of girl that envisions her "future wedding," I am definitely a romantic, and I so admire these charming and creative party ideas.

pizza, the vegetable

Last November, Congress called pizza a vegetable. Or did they? As a Washington Post blogger explained, the debate was actually about how much tomato paste equated one full serving of vegetables. Either way, it's a bit ridiculous. But I will say that I believe pizza to be healthy. Or at least healthy enough. Seriously, just think about it: crispy thin crust; fresh, flavorful tomatoes; mild buffalo mozzarella; and simple, picked-off-the-plant basil. What's not to love?

I love pizza, but the good kind, from an actual pizzeria. I could do without the silly named pies topped with pounds of oily cheese, salty tomato sauce, and greasy meats. I have no need for overpoweringly doughy crusts. (Sorry, Chicago.) I'd also be happy to never, ever taste non-fat--or even low-fat--cheese, again. Though I'll admit I do appreciate a whole grain crust. Depending on the day, I either crave a somewhat authentic slice with seasonal vegetables, or one prepared margherita-style, as described above. I enjoy it this way and almost always alongside a salad.

A random post, yes, but being as we're about one week away from the last day of January 2012, I've been reflecting on my first meal in the United States this year. You wouldn't happen to be a pizza-lover too, would you?

fifty surprises

I've been having oatmeal 80% of all the mornings in the past four years. That's a lot of oatmeal. Lately, I've been enjoying rolled oats, cooked in water with a pinch of salt and vanilla extract, fruit-free, mixed with a dollop of plain greek yogurt, and topped with cinnamon. And I'm eager to whisk in an egg someday soon.

But no matter how I choose to prepare it, oatmeal is reliable. It always has been. How comforting it is to begin my day with a bowl that is so delicious, satisfying, healthy, and safe. Especially for me, who whole heartedly hopes there is truth in Goethe's words: "Be bold, and mighty forces will come to your aid."

A couple weeks ago, my family and I threw a party for my mom's 50th birthday. She'd only requested that we go on vacation to celebrate it (and we did) but my dad felt she deserved something more. It was my mom who first came up with le surprise. She's thoughtful and clever like that, and is so good in so many other ways, that my dad wanted to surprise her. So we did that, too. She had absolutely no idea it was coming and was thoroughly embarrassed the moment she walked into the room. Thankfully, soon after, she also had a really great time.

It was a successful evening, and by its end, I had a slice of cake. I don't like cake. Growing up, I always had brownies at my birthday party and avoided ice cream cake (and all other kinds, especially fancy ones) like the plague at all others. But I've recently found an appreciation for cheesecake and my soft spot for carrot cake is growing, so I've been trying a bite or two as the opportunity comes up. This was a millefoglie and it was incredible. It actually surprised me how much I enjoyed it... yet it also made perfect sense. Taking chances, being bold, and challenging what we know to be "safe", is worth it. Most things eventually turn out the way they should. And whether we expect it or not, we do enjoy lots of happy endings in this anything but easy life. There was, after all, a time when I didn't like oatmeal.

I think I'd call myself a New Yorker. I mean, I was born in the state, and this is the city I know best. But I wouldn't say I'm rude or pretentious about it. I understand New York isn't necessarily "the greatest city in the world" and definitely not "the center of the universe." And yet, I also believe that other cities pale in comparison--not for better or worse, but just because New York City really is one of a kind.

In my humble opinion, this quote describes it best.

With all that said :) I usually love living here, if nothing else, then for one reason alone: my friends can visit often and they do. Liz came most recently. For the past two years, she's been working miles away in rural Washington so seeing her is always a special occasion. It was also especially exciting to meet her boyfriend. He'd never been here before, and I wanted to show him the city's best.

Of course, I could hardly do that it one night. We began in Union Square, sampling local beers at Little Town NYC. We then took a stroll through the East Village to taste the delights of one of my favorite seasonal and farm-to-table restaurants, Northern Spy. And finally, courtesy of Elizabeth's dependable sweet tooth, we ventured to momofuku milk bar. It was a delicious evening.

This time, I chose places based on my own positive experiences, but that's not always the case. When researching new places to dine, I often return to New York Magazine and Yelp... though I've been depending on The Purple Passport lately.

Maybe I'm biased, but there really are some amazing restaurant recommendations there (in addition to nightlife venues to suit any owl personality, spas that are most definitely worth the splurge, sights & activities to be explored no matter your NYC familiarity, and the only suggestions made just for tourists, hotels.) We put our heart and soul into the New York guide, and I'm proud to promote it.

Speaking of tourists, Joanna Goddard shared 10 ways not to look like one. My favorite tips? "Confidence is key. One thing I love about New York women is that they flaunt their quirks. Got a head full of curls? Let them fly free. Six feet tall without heels? Wear them anyway. Want to wear all electric blue? Go for it. In this city, it'll only make you cooler." "New Yorkers imagine that there's an invisible line down the middle if the sidewalk, and that to keep the flow going, you keep to the RIGHT. New Yorkers also walk at a brisk pace, and if they stop or even slow down, they step out of the way." "New Yorkers fold their pizza." And now,

getting to know you

Happy Thursday, dears! Today's post is going to be a little different. In the summer of 2008, I revealed a couple of my little known quirks (here and here), but a little less than four years later, and I still don't think you realize how ~~weird~~ unique I am. Fortunately for us both, the 6 Weeks of Bliss Challenge prompted me to share "5 personal tidbits that may surprise my newest fans" and Cait recently tagged me to share 7 Random Facts about myself. Let's get started. This is going to be fun...

1. I don't have a nickname. It's sad, really, because I wish I did. Nobody calls me "Lala" outside my home. In middle school, my friend Marisa called me "Dani," my friend Nicole called me "Donnie," and my friend Codie called me "Danielley." None of them caught on. In high school, my field hockey coach called me "Alvarez," but being as that is my last name, it doesn't really count. And, although ma souer took to calling me "Dela" (a combination of my initials--including my confirmation name, Lucia), nobody else (except for K, occasionally) does.

2. I am the queen of last minute packing, and with good reason; I find it sad to pack up a bag or suitcase too far in advance. Truth is, as much as I live to travel, I love home. I feel bad for my apartment or my parent's house if I pack up too soon... as if it were somehow disrespectful to be overly eager to stay elsewhere for a while. Totally bizarre, I know.

3. I firmly believe that real foodies appreciate olives. While in Europe, Elizabeth and I made it a point to order olives on each and every thing we ate dining out. Neither of us liked olives, but we were determined to change that by the end of the four months. Having olives with dishes and foods we otherwise really wanted made us acquire a taste for them, and today, I can proudly say I appreciate olives. I don't think there's ever been a more appropriate time to: boo-yah!

4. I have to wash my hands upon arriving at a restaurant. It's most likely a good thing, and definitely a sanitary habit, but I think it's rooted in OCD-ness. I literally always have to wash my hands upon arriving at a restaurant. And when you're, say, on a date with a boy, (or at least someone you don't know very well or haven't seen in a while,) it's probably rude to run to the restroom right away. Wouldn't you agree?

5. I've said this once before, but I strongly dislike most of the process of air traveling. You'd think that having done it so often, I'd feel otherwise. But I don't. It's so annoying to have to arrive early, stand on a long line to go through security, and then sit in an uncomfortable chair (and most likely pay for wi-fi) as you wait the hour or so until your plane begins boarding. Not to mention that I honestly always get a little nervous at the beginning of each flight.

6. I really, really want to go sailing. I made it my goal this summer to meet someone who could take me out on a sailboat. Well, that goal failed. Then, in San Francisco, I did meet someone who could take me out on his sailboat, and offered to do so. Trouble was, I didn't exactly feel comfortable sailing away from the unfamiliar west coast with a stranger. Plus, it looked like it was going to rain.

7. I haven't figured anything out. I mean that. I'm aware that I oftentimes seem "wise," that I'm constantly sharing romantic revelations, and career advice, and ways to live a little better, but that's only because I'm a thoughtful person (almost embarrassingly so) and this is my preferred space to share those deep thoughts of mine. Don't you ever think that someone knows exactly what they're doing. Nobody does, myself included. We all doubt ourselves sometimes! I believe we're all just trying our best, and hopefully learning along the way.

Fin. Now I'm supposed to continue this chain and tag seven more bloggers... but I'm not going to do that. Instead, I'm going to tell you that the delicious meal you see above was enjoyed at Lure Fishbar as per the occasion of a visit from my mom and her friend, the what-a-great-deal allure of Restaurant Week, and the esteemed recommendation of The Purple Passport. I live my life simply: "eat well, travel often." Simply enough, at least :) since those two past times are related. I don't travel to visit a place I've never been before, check it off the list, and possibly get my passport stamped. I travel to discover new things... and as such, trying a new restaurant offers me that same thrill.

Over the summer, I purchased a gift card (through DailyCandy) to a Hamptons-based restaurant. A few months ago, I was told the restaurant had closed. But they did offer me a chance to exchange it for another icitycerts gift card. So, with my affection for everything French and my fascination with Vietnamese culture, I chose Manhattan's Le Colonial and invited my cousin on a romantic dinner date.

A fusion of culinary backgrounds often leads to a delicious meal, but when those two cultures have as much history as the French and the Vietnamese, the entire meal becomes an entire enchanting experience; "Set in the backdrop of the bustling Upper East Side on 57th Street, Le Colonial transports you to another place in time, recapturing the beauty, romance and spirit of French Colonial Southeast Asia."

In the midst of a formal, airy dining room featuring a tin ceiling, vintage photographs, wicker accents, ceiling fans, lush, potted palms, and soft 1920's French music, Bianca and enjoyed a three-course meal of truly amazing Vietnamese. We started with Goi Cuon (soft salad rolls with poached prawns, lettuce, vermicelli, herbs and hoisin chili sauce) and each had the Ca Chien Gung (ginger roasted salmon with sauteed leeks, bell peppers, asparagus and basil sauce) as our entrée. The service was also very attentive and friendly.

When it came time for dessert, we were torn between le Tarte Tatin and le Mousse au Chocolat. Thankfully, being as we'd also enjoyed an exquisite Pinot Noir, we were ~~tipsy~~ open-minded enough to order both desserts. It was a very good choice as both were absolutely divine. And afterwards, with the icitycerts gift card, we were able to return to our average "twentysomething in the city" lives unscathed.

As far as my upcoming plans go: my next big trip is going to be a homecoming, I plan to visit K at least once, and I hope to use the JetBlue points I've acquired to organize a very affordable week or two staying in Colombia with my grandmother's family. In the mean time, I'll continue to explore as I make the most of one of my favorite seven days of the year: NYC Restaurant Week.

sunday brunch

It was a beautiful day last Sunday. I woke up naturally at 9 , took a stroll through the farmers market, made myself a slice of toast with almond butter for a light breakfast, and then helped my roommate Catherine straighten up the kitchen.

She had invited two of her friends, Dan and Andrea, over to make brunch. I was looking forward to it (1) because brunch is my favorite meal of the week, (2) because I hadn't really spent time with them since we wore floppy hats to Governor's Island, and (3) because Andrea is a culinary school graduate.

We started with drinks. First, coffee. Next, (after prepping the pomegranate Dave and Andrea had unexpectedly brought), we put a spoonful of arils into each glass, followed by champagne and a splash of St. Germain. It was a delightful, spur-of-the-moment creation of a brunch cocktail. Then we got to work on the menu. Catherine sliced, toasted, and buttered the country bread she'd bought fresh that morning while I helped Andrea prepare Baked Eggs in her adorable ramekins.

In addition to the plate above, I also helped myself to yogurt and orange slices. We drank, ate, and were completely and utterly merry for the rest of the afternoon.

To recreate the experience for yourself, I couldn't recommend this recipe more. It's quick, tastes impressive, and is much less intimidating than any quiche I've ever made. Even with just garlic and thyme (the only herbs we had on hand), and divided amongst four (the recipe is for two) it was delicious. Try it this weekend.

Ina Garten's Herbed-Baked Eggs

1/4 tsp minced fresh garlic

1/4 tsp minced fresh thyme

1/4 tsp minced fresh roesmary leaves

1 tbsp minced fresh parsley

1 tbsp freshly grated Parmesan

6 extra-large eggs

2 tbsp heavy cream

1 tbsp unsalted butter

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Toasted French bread or brioche, for serving

Preheat the broiler for 5 minutes and place the oven rack 6 inches below the heat.
Combine the garlic, thyme, rosemary, parsley, and Parmesan and set aside. Carefully crack 3 eggs into each of 2 small bowls or teacups (you won't be baking them in these) without breaking the yolks. (It's very important to have all the eggs ready to go before you start cooking.)
Place 2 individual gratin dishes on a baking sheet. Place 1 tbsp of cream and 1/2 tbsp of butter in each dish and place under the broiler for about 3 minutes, until hot and bubbly. Quickly, but carefully, pour 3 eggs into each gratin dish and sprinkle evenly with the herb mixture, then sprinkle liberally with salt and pepper. Place back under the broiler for 5 to 6 minutes, until the whites of the eggs are almost cooked. (Rotate the baking sheet once if they aren't cooking evenly.) The eggs will continue to cook after you take them out of the oven. Allow to set for 60 seconds and serve hot with toasted bread.

the grand grand canyon

I had my first hot toddy tonight. This cold weather cocktail (originating in Northern England) is traditionally prepared with a mixture of whiskey, boiling water, and sugar or honey. Mine at the Cover Club was made with cloves and a lemon slice too. It was delicious... and needed in the way drinks sometimes are.

Even with all I learned in 2011, apparently no amount of wisdom could ever rid me of my worries. And I'm assumedly not the only one. Last November, Joanna Goddard admitted to being plagued by her own and how, at 27, it lead her to a therapist for a few months. How did the therapist respond? With this:

"Picture that the Grand Canyon is your life--your past, present, and future. Start envisioning the various parts of your life within the canyon: Over there is the day you were born, your third-grade choir performance, your job as a babysitter. Picture your present: There's your apartment, your friends, your mom, the book you're reading right now. Picture your future: There's your next vacation, the love of your life, your future children, the Top Chef finale :)."

"Now, my therapist told me, picture the enormous Grand Canyon and drop your worry into it. Whatever you're worrying about--your cranky boss, your dating life, a salty comment from a friend--will be barely visible. 'See how tiny it looks?' she says. Suddenly your problem will seem much, much smaller in comparison to the grand course of your huge, rich, long life."

I don't know about you, but I'd agree that it's brilliant. It really helps put each worry into perspective.

That, and gives me a reason to reminisce about my 2005 visit to the Grand Canyon. I was 17 and had applied to the 10-day program that brought myself and a dozen other high-schoolers to study the Earth sciences in Arizona. It was fun, educational, and absolutely spectacular. On our first night, we took the inns towels out to the edge of the canyon to stargaze. I saw more shooting stars in the those twenty minutes than I had in my entire life. Similar to how good everything has turned out to be in the past six years since then, that memory continues to amaze me.

proof that beer is healthy

It's no surprise that I love wine. I was conditioned to, having studied in notable wine countries like Chile and France, and continue to explore my refined (ha) tastes in unexpected places like Central New York and Williamsburg. I do like beer too though, and I prefer it on the hottest summer days and coldest winter ones.

Plus, (didn't you hear?) beer can be really healthy. The fact that Whole Foods is serving beer should be proof enough, but I'll expand further...

(1) Hops, a primary ingredient in beer, is "a significant source of cholesterol-lowering, cancer-fighting, and virus-killing compounds called polyphenols."

(2) Brewer's yeast, which is added to beer bottles right before they're closed, "is a rich source of B-complex vitamins, protein, and minerals such as chromium." Furthermore, "as a probiotic organism, yeast helps your body break down nutrients, regulates your digestive system, maintains your nervous system, and even helps modulate blood-sugar levels."

(3) The dark malt roasting process, used in brewing stouts, porters, and browns, fuels the formation of more than twice the amount of antioxidants found in the average lager. "What's more, 'The antioxidants in beer are better at reacting with toxic-free radicals than the ones in antioxidant vitamins pills."

(4) And perhaps the most important piece of health information (discovered through personal experience as opposed to an article in Men's Health): blowing off a week of steam with three great friends is always really good for you.

beyond wild on

Does anyone remember "Wild On," a travel show that was on E! from the late 90's (gosh, I feel old) into the early 2000's? Brooke Burke was one of a few hosts, and she traveled around the world to find "good times" a.k.a. "sizzling spring break spots" and "sexy dance clubs." Well, although I watched it, seeking out that kind of travel has never been an aspiration of mine. So when I found out we were headed to Cancún for New Year's, I was interested to see how it would unravel.

In the end, vacationing in Mexico was everything I'd hoped it'd be and more.

Our all-inclusive resort was beautiful and thankfully served great food. Upon arriving on Thursday afternoon, we helped ourselves to one of many buffets.

Unfortunately, because of the hotels positioning, our beach saw little sun after 3pm. The first day was uneventful albeit thoroughly relaxing as a result.

The next morning, I served myself a breakfast plate that would become consistent throughout our stay there: poached eggs in verde salsa, beans, fried plantains, fresh fruit, and a slice of whole grain bread... all enjoyed alongside a very strong cup of coffee. Delicious.

Then, like every other day, we hit to the beach. I spent at least six hours/day here.

And here. Sometimes I simply lounged, eating up my light beach read of choice, or swam, riding the calm waves of the warm Caribbean waters.

Other times I watched my siblings and their friends play beach volleyball. (Not my sport, but I'm a good cheerer).

On Friday night, we dressed up to embark on a family booze cruise.

The night ended at Señor Frogs with huge margaritas for all... because we're, um, classy like that.

The following morning, on New Year's Eve, we ventured to Isla Mujeres.

We swam with each other first, and then with a sea lion named Michelle, a manatee named Caesar, and two dolphins named ? and ?, It was a good time.

We also had an amazing lunch, mostly made up of spinach & custard empanadas.

Later on, we headed back to Cancún to ring in the New Year.

After spending most of the day in the water, we looked rough. But that didn't stop us from gleefully accepting flutes of champagne upon arrival to our resort.

It was a Happy New Year.

We obviously had a slower start on Monday, our last full day there. In addition to my perfectly balanced and incredibly flavorful breakfast plate, I also had two pancakes and an extra cup of coffee.

New Year's Day passed by seamlessly enough. Highlights include: a long, long nap on the beach, a long shower, and a delightful, nightcap bottle of wine shared with my mom and her friend at an Argentinian restaurant down the street.

And on Tuesday morning, January 2nd, my mom's 50th birthday, we left.

But not before getting my fill on Mayan ruins. Yes, it was the most perfect family vacation. Not to mention that it was (oh!) complete with a New Year's kiss too...

See, told you so :) I hope 2012 has been treating you extremely well so far.

what i learned last year

"Ring out the old, ring in the new." I like the thought. But being as I'm shamelessly sentimental, I can't help but believe that there's value in bringing the old with us into the new. Whether it's the memories of good times, forever friendships made recently, or wisdom gained through all the experiences, it would surely be a mistake to let it all go. So, even though it's January 3rd and we're well on our way into 2012, I thought I'd take the time to reflect on 2011...

January 2011. Starting off the year with your best friends is just about the best thing ever. Becoming 'one of the guys,' foregoing makeup, and backpacking through Central America is also an absolute blast, and so worth the experience.

February 2011. Just because you don't feel like a real person yet, doesn't mean you're incapable of getting a real person job. Celebrating at your alma mater makes it all the more satisfying. Furthermore, if you don't have a boyfriend on Valentine's Day, surround yourself with girlfriends for an even better time. Promise.

March 2011. Visiting great friends is one of the absolute best ways to travel. Figuring out your happiest lifestyle and being aware of your beliefs are two of life's greatest gifts. Not to mention, Kris Carr is the coolest person ever.

April 2011. Whether you believe it or not, there's always something new to discover in your hometown. If you're lucky, maybe it'll be Stone Barns. Either way though, let yourself feel whatever it is you need to feel. You'll be better off.

May 2011. Don't underestimate the magnitude of moving out of your parent's house and into your own apartment. It's always the little things. Also, you should totally celebrate your birthday all week... all month, even.

June 2011. One of the many perks of living in New York is hosting friends almost every weekend. Your siblings are growing up faster than you realize. Brunch is the best meal of the week. (But we already knew that, didn't we?)

July 2011. Appreciate the Fourth, and be thankful to have roommates as friends. Lobster rolls really are all they're cracked up to be; so is Maine. You will never grow out of grilled cheeses or friend dates. Never ever.

August 2011. Take the time to find beauty in unexpected places. Your heart is a muscle, you will strengthen it by opening it up again. There's nothing like a good blogger conference or a meal at this favorite East Village restaurant.

September 2011. No matter how busy you are, make time for family vacations. There really are such things as blessings in disguise. And, if you've ever wondered about the perfect getaway, this is it.

October 2011 (a transformative month). There's something special about Boston. You deserve to love your work. Playing dress up never gets old. You are forever surrounded by inspiration. Halloween may not be your favorite holiday, but it is pretty darn fun when spent in New York with people you love.

November 2011. Eat meat if you want to. When you have the opportunity to go to the Foodbuzz Festival, go to the Foodbuzz Festival. Same goes for taking an unexpected chance. And don't forget to give thanks, every single day.

December 2011. You and this blog mean the world to me. You should know what SantaCon is. When it comes to cheap, healthy meals from your kitchen, simple is best. The holidays are meant to be happy. On New Year's Eve, and every day there after, it begins and ends with family. And, finally, "lighten the fuck up." For the record, lightening up is a whole lot easier when you wake up to views like these.

Gosh, this new year has been so happy so far. We will soon review 2011, the family vacation I just returned from, and the many, many things to look forward to. Until then...

Last night, I saw New Year's Eve with my little sister. It was a good (not great) romantic comedy, as expected, and refreshingly not quite as predictable as I'd assumed. Quite a light, feel good film, too. My sister and I literally skipped our way out of the theater... holding hands, no less. I'd like to think the crowd behind us was inspired by our awesomeness. Yesiree.

Anyway, let's talk New Year's Eve in real life as opposed to on the silver screen--it's a good time. And in the midst of figuring out plans, making resolutions, finding the right outfit, and secretly hoping that there'll be a kiss at midnight or any other magical occurrence that suggests the coming year is going to be better than the last, it's also a time of pressure.

Try not to let it get to you.

Don't let Real Simple convince you of the overwhelming number of bad habits you have to break this new year. Don't let Women's Health lead you to believe you weren't as slim, calm, and sexy as you should've been this past year. But, just this once, perhaps you ought to open yourself up to what Glamour has to share:

It's been reported that for the first time, the number one New Year's resolution for more than half of American resolution-makers is to spend more time with family and friends. This beat the usual top resolutions of exercising more, weight loss and smoking cessation, which fell into the number two, three and four spots for 2012.

The blogger who noted these findings, further explained her opinion on our re-prioritized commitment to our relationships. She acknowledged that it might have to do with the poor economy, but that it is hopefully also a more meaningful shift. "For a culture that often gets a bad rap for being self-centered and entitled (an accusation directed most often at us young adults), finally we're turning the focus away from ourselves and onto the important people in our lives."

I believe I've experienced a similar revelation of sorts. This is the first New Year's Eve I'll be celebrating alongside my family since 2004-2005. I'm excited. Sure, I love the fact that we'll be at the beach, but I also didn't mind turning down invitations with friends. I know I'll spend ample amount of time them with in 2012. On the other hand, as a high school junior, I remember being annoyed I had to go on that one and only family ski trip to rural New England, making it impossible to stop by friend's party and kiss my then-boyfriend at midnight.

The plans for this year's celebration: Ring in the New Year with my wonderful family in Cancún, Mexico, and reunite with all those great friends soon after. It doesn't get much better than that.

What's more is that this really has been quite the year. I look forward to reviewing it in the next few days, and then beginning anew on January 1st. Why? Because "[I am] young enough to believe that anything is possible, and [I am] old enough to make that belief a reality." The quote is from this RELEVANT Magazine article, by the way. As the writer explains the 11 Things to Know at 25(ish), she advises this:

Don't get stuck. Move, travel, take a class, take a risk. There is a season for wildness and a season for settledness, and this is neither. This season is about becoming. Don't lose yourself at happy hour, but don't lose yourself on the corporate ladder either. Stop every once in a while and go out to coffee or climb in bed with your journal.

Everyone has advice to offer this time of year, but I found those words to be especially helpful. They take the pressure off and remind us how important it is to be in the moment, take care of ourselves, and appreciate life.

In 2010, I resolved to do these ten things. In 2011, I strove to live fearlessly and reflected on the healthiest resolution of them all. This year, I don't have a resolution. I do have an personal intention for today, tomorrow, and every single day in 2012 though: Make today that someday.

It's going to be a Happy New Year.

Aside from the two family Christmas parties and a festive, friendly brunch, I also attended two holiday parties; One at my cousin's apartment, and another in Astoria with college friends. Both included lots of good food and conversation.

My cousin Bianca's included dancing as well, (as to be expected since she's a classically-trained dancer). Whereas my friend's additionally featured a Yankee Swap, (during which I was lucky enough to snag these Anthropologie glasses). For those who are unfamiliar, a Yankee Swap is a gift exchange game in which each guest (1) brings a wrapped, unmarked gift and (2) is given a number as they arrive which designates which order they'll choose from the pile of unmarked gifts. The twist is that, at their turn, each guest can also choose to "steal" from a gift that has already been opened. In this case, the guest whose original gift had been stolen has the opportunity to choose another one from the pile or steal one from someone else. Keep it in mind for next year ;) it's quite fun.

Anyway, as I was reviewing the numerous photos taken these two nights, I came upon the one above. Unlike many others that were so hysterically wine-induced, I thought this one was simply cute--one of many laughs shared between Bianca and I. And it inspired me to share some silly things I've been entertaining myself with:

The Top 10 Tips and Tricks for a Winter Body on hellogiggles. My favorite is either "Try doing everyday stuff with mittens on," or "If it doesn't have a crust on, don't eat it."
Just Dance 3. My sister got this Wii game for Christmas. The song variety is awesome and the choreography is just challenging enough to make even the most coordinated (my sister) look absolutely ridiculous. Two nights ago, I played for an hour and a half. And my arms still hurt.
Take me as I am by Wyclef Jean. It's very possible I've been listening to the Love Actually soundtrack one too many times, but, 'tis the season. No matter how many times I hear it, I can't help but laugh at the first few lines.
What's the Most Annoying Kind of Facebook Update? poll in January's Real Simple. Ha. I'd definitely have to agree with "Intentionally vague posts meant to generate concern and attention, a.k.a. vaguebooking. 'Jennifer wonders whether it's all been worth it.'" and "Chronic complaining. 'Ugh, who ordered this RAIN? It's making my carpal tunnel act up again.'"
New Girl on FOX. If you start watching one new show in 2012, please make it this one. I'm obviously a huge Zoeey Deschanel fan.

P.S. Every time I say "silly goose"--or, rather, every time I hear "silly goose," because, let's be serious, I don't say it often--I'm reminded at how gross ma soeur finds the phrase. Don't ask me why... but the thought cracks me up.

the hostess with the mostest

Decorating the tree is a lot more fun than putting away the decorations and throwing out the tree. So is finding the perfect gifts and giving them verses finding places for new things and making returns at crowded stores. Surprise, surprise :). Since I'll only really be spending these next two days doing the less fun holiday to-dos above, I figured I'd recap two of my favorite parties of the season.

The first was less of a party and more of a brunch. Anna invited Leslie, Katie, and I over to her new apartment to delight in the delicacies of Silver Moon Bakery and her own breakfasting skills. She is quite the host let me tell you.

She offered the chocolate chip brioche (above) alongside arugula salad with goat cheese and cranberries, French bread with an assortment of jams, and her family recipe for spinach-ricotta frittata. As for beverages, Leslie prepared my beloved Blue Bottle Coffee, Katie provided orange juice, and I brought a bottle of champagne for mimosas which we ended up deciding against.

It was the first time I didn't have a light breakfast before brunch. Usually, I wake up at a normal hour with a voracious appetite and am unable to wait until 11, or 12, or 1 to eat my first meal. This particular Sunday, however, I slept in rather late (I blame it on the fact that I'd been gallivanting around the city dressed as a reindeer the day before) so I had to help myself to seconds. Oh well...

We all stayed at the table long after we'd been satisfied. You know that great conversation you only have with really good friends? Well, that was happening. And somewhere amongst it, Anna brought out festive sugar cookies for dessert.

Once we were finally were ready to leave, she also handed out peppermint bark. It was amazing. For the next week, I enjoyed a piece a day and was very sad when I came upon my last. Like I said, Anna is quite the host... especially compared to me. In the past I've always gotten too carried away beforehand and stressed myself out along the way as I anxiously made sure everyone was enjoying themselves. For as much as I love playing tour guide, hosting doesn't seem to be my thing. Moral of the story: I'm so glad to have friends to depend on for good times like these.

Friday, 6pm: left my Upper East Side apartment for home. (It was dark).

Saturday, 7pm: ate ceviche with chips as an appetizer at my aunt's house.

Saturday, 8:30pm: took a family portrait in front of my cousins' tree.

Saturday 9pm: shared a bowl of posole (pre-Columbian stew with hominy, pork, chili peppers, cabbage, and hot sauce) with my mom.

Saturday, 9:30pm: devoured one and a half tamales (masa, lard, and pork/cheese wrapped in corn husks) with plenty of salsa dulce (sweet salsa).

Saturday, 9:32pm: drank a sip of atole (a corn-based beverage of indigenous origin with cinnamon and vanilla) in between each tamale bite.

Saturday, 10:30pm: took a photo with my cousins and our grandparents who are visiting from Mexico.

Saturday, 10:45pm - Sunday, 1am: played taboo with my cousins, ate peanut m&m's for dessert, received my secret santa gift (yoga pants, tanks, and The New York Times 36 Hours book), and had a very good night's sleep.

Sunday, 9am: woke up to see that Santa had indeed visited our home.

Sunday, 9:20am: ate a foundation breakfast of oatmeal, peanut butter, and coffee.

Sunday, 9:30am: opened my first gift, the gorgeous Toy Watch I'd lusted over!

Sunday, 10am: helped my dogs, Sable (brown) and Colby (white) to their presents.

Sunday, 11:30am: reviewed my goodies from my Secret Santa, my parents, my brother and my sister... and decided I've been ridiculously good this year.

Sunday, 1pm: set up the appetizers after prepping the house for company.

Sunday, 1:30pm: greeted my grandparents, aunts, uncle, and 7 cousins.

Sunday, 3pm: entertained myself with nuts, held over hunger by eating them.

Sunday, 4pm: worked my way through the family members for that special one-on-one time I wait all year for, and the hilarious conversations that come with it.

Sunday, 5:30pm: navigated through the delicious buffet dinner my mom prepared.

Sunday, 5:34pm: enjoyed salad, escarole and beans, chicken scarpiello, roasted brussel sprouts, and bread, alongside a glass of wine.

Sunday, 6pm: decided I absolutely love spending time with my brother and sister (as usual).

Sunday, 6:30pm: exchanged gifts with my mom's family and was reminded, again, just how lucky I am to have such a generous family with great taste.

Sunday, 7pm: delighted in ~~one~~ three chocolate-covered red velvet cake bites.

Sunday, 8:30pm: didn't return to the city. Instead, I helped clean up, put my lovely gifts away, and sat down to blog. And soon after publishing this, I will retire to the living room with peppermint tea, my mom, dad, brother, sister, Sable, and Colby.

Hope your holiday was just as merry and bright.

have yourself a merry little christmas

It's Christmas Eve, and I've already worked out; it's my fourth time this week.

For as wonderful and loving as my parents are, there's one statement they don't share often: "I'm proud of you." That's not to say, of course, that I don't believe they are. I know it. They've always encouraged and supported me, and I couldn't be more grateful. But I also believe that the lack of frequency in the reiteration of the fact affected me. It drove me to be self-motivated and to seek self-satisfaction. I cannot tell you how many times I virtually pat myself on the back each day.

So when I tell you that- this morning, I worked out for the fourth time this week, I say it with pride. I've formally exercised more in this past month than I did the entire summer. Being active is my thing, but going to the gym, running on a daily basis, frequenting fitness classes to the point at which I'd become recognizable, isn't necessarily. To be honest, I wanted to get into better shape mostly because I knew I'd be on the beach come this year's end. Do I now have the most perfect bikini bod? Of course not. But I did end up rediscovering mi confianza.

It's probably the greatest gift I could've given myself this year. Because, at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter how many people tell you how proud they are of you, or how great of a job you're doing, or (my favorite) a simple "well done." What's important is that you trust in how capable you are and recognize how much you're achieving, every single day. Success is all relative. It starts and ends with you.

Regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas or Hannukah, wishing you the very merry weekend you undoubtedly deserve, from my family to yours.

college kid meals

As you may have gathered from my last few posts, I've been eating out a lot lately. (Click here if you'd like to do so too... for free). I blame it first on the numerous holiday parties, and second on my determination to catch up with every single friend before 2012--what better way to do so than over lunch, dinner, or drinks?

Especially being that I thoroughly enjoy leftovers (true) and am not at all tight on cash after finding the perfect gift for each member of my family (false). But it's fine. In addition to festive social calendar, I've also been working overtime as The Purple Passport prepared for the launch of our guide to New York. <-Take a look!

Anyway :) point is, I've been busy... and thus relying on college staples like banana oatmeal, tuna salad, and soups that I've saved in the freezer when I'm not out. It's been grand. My meals at home, however limited, are simple, allowing me to fully appreciate the holiday meals at friend's parties and restaurants.

It also makes these next few days a little extra special. Later today, I am headed home for the Christmas holiday. I plan to lay low tonight, spend Christmas Eve at my cousin's house (on my dad's side), and help my mom host our Christmas Day afternoon dinner for her family. I am going to overindulge in more ways than one this next week, and then return to healthy, college kid meals in no time. Paired with sleep and activity, that's just how this "grown up" maintains balance... whatever that is.

mexican memories

Hey! Before you read any further, have you commented on my last post yet? Doing so might win you $100 towards your next restaurant meal.

You know how, when you're a child, you assume everyone else's life is like yours? I was pretty convinced that all toddlers had birthday parties in parks with numerous cousins, friends, adults, and a piñata; that most dads spoke Spanish in addition to English; and that visiting grandparents in a rural town of Mexico followed by a few days on the Pacific coast was pretty standard for a family vacation.

Nowadays, I know better :) but looking back at childhood like that certainly makes me appreciate how special it was. With that said, as a result of the "unimpressive" nature of my annual trip to Mexico from 2 to 12, I've never explored the country from a cultural perspective. In one week, I hope to change that. Sure I'll be in Cancún--the ever-popular spring break destination of partying college students everywhere--but I'll also be close to Mayan ruins, Isla Mujeres, and the neighboring town of Playa del Carmen. Somehow, I intend to see it all.

And then, of course, there's the food and drink element to look forward to. Last week, I met my Valentine's Day dates (almost 10 months to the day!) at Chavellas. I'd been planning on a margarita, but after browsing through their tequila cocktail menu, neither I nor Leslie couldn't resist the Amor Prohibido. This tequila martini con escabeche was incredibly strong ~~and thus~~ yet amazing.

For our entrées, we each ordered a taco duo. I enjoyed uno de nopales (cactus, avocado, pico de gallo, queso fresco, and pickled jalapeño) and uno de pescado (tilapia, shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, chipotle salsa, and lime) alongside surprisingly extra delicious arroz y frijoles. And then, somewhere in our endless conversation, Megan mentioned how nice it'd be to be in Mexico for New Year's.

It will be. As much as Christmas at home will surely be grand, I can't even tell you how excited I am for the delicious family adventure that is sure to follow. Until then, bonus points to anyone that can identify me in the first photo ;).

My darling parents love dining out almost as much as I do. So when I was offered the chance to treat them (and my brother and sister) to a gourmet Manhattan meal, I applied immediately. I was thrilled to have been chosen as a participant in the Tastemaker opportunity with Serve from American Express.

Serve is a pretty amazing service that allows you to send and receive money from a mobile device wherever you're enjoying a meal. Unfortunately, I didn't thoroughly enjoy the process. In addition to signing up on their website, I had to link up to a bank, debit, or credit card account which proved to be more complicated than I would've liked. Then, when it came time to pay the bill, their convenient app wasn't recognizing my email address (danielle@danielle-abroad.com) as valid so I had to promise my dad I'd pay him back a few days later online.

Still, I do appreciate the concept. And the entire dining experience that came from this very generous promotion was absolute perfection from beginning to end. I chose to bring my family to Alloro; it had a OpenTable rating above most of the restaurants in my neighborhood. This innovative Italian gem did not disappoint.

We began with a bottle of Lis Neris Cabernet Sauvignon (which has since become my new favorite winter red), warm toasted Italian bread, and a trio of spectacular olive oil, tomato tapenade, and olives. My roommate and I also split the Insalata di Salvatore: 10, 20, 30 maybe more among them fruit, herbs, greens, seeds & other. It was, by far, one of the best salads I've had this year.

My mom was coming off of a cleanse and simply ordered a soup for her meal. But this was not just any soup, she had the zuppa di mais alla vaniglia con calamari spillo, olio al prezzemolo e germogli di barbarbietola: vanilla flavored corn soup with baby calamari, parsley oil & bull's blood. It was beyond incredible.

As for the other entrées: my sister chose the homemade fettucine with porcine mushrooms in a light tomato broth; my brother, the sliced ribeye in a red wine sauce, raw polenta, hazelnut butter brussel sprouts; and my dad, roasted sea bass, black truffle potato puree, eggplant croquette, amber beer sauce. I don't doubt that each bite was phenomenal, but I wouldn't actually be able to know.

I was far too caught up in my filet di salmone con salsa livornese piccantina, crema bruciata di cavolfirori e spinai saltati: salmon filet in a spicy livornese sauce, cauliflower creme brule, sautéed spinach. butternut squash & swiss chard soup

There are a few things I don't understand about the holidays. First, why it's so unfortunate to be single. Really, it is? All this time I'd been convinced that Christmas was a religious or over-commercialized holiday centered around family, while other timely holidays like Hanukkah and Kwanza were even less focused on romantic relationships. Sure, there are quite a few holiday songs about being in love, or missing your love, or wanting love... but I'm pretty sure those kinds of songs play all year long. In my opinion, it's actually quite convenient not to be in a relationship during this time; you don't have to agonize over what to get "that special someone," nor worry about attempting to balance family traditions. Mind you, I don't think I'd ever mind being in love, I'm just saying.

Second, why it's so stressful in regards to eating and drinking. It doesn't have to be. (As I say this, please note it's not because I'm spared from the temptation of the countless number of extra delicious treats.) If you allow yourself to step back from the instinctively hectic feelings, look at your upcoming parties and celebrations with appreciation, and then choose to think about them as festive social events instead of calorie-ridden sugar feasts, I believe these few weeks can be more enjoyable. Truly, truly. This season would be better spent treating yourself extra well, honoring your blessings, and being generous in every which way anyway. Eliminating these silly downers, of course, is easier said than done, so let's discuss how absolutely wonderful nature's seasonal bounty is instead.

Sweet transition, huh? Okay. Earlier this week, I made myself soup. The final product could not look less appealing but I promise you it is delectable. So much so, that although it took about 2.5 hours to prepare, it was entirely worth it. I've already frozen four servings so that I can healthfully indulge in the future.

Butternut Squash & Swiss Chard Soup

1 butternut squash
2 celery stalks
1 parsnip
- 2 apples (any variety good for cooking)
1 bunch of swiss chard
1 yellow onion
32 oz. vegetable broth
1 tbsp butter
1 tbsp olive oil
6 garlic cloves
cinnamon, pumpkin spice, salt, pepper to taste

Place whole, clean butternut squash in preheating oven (350 degrees).
While the squash is softening, chop celery, parsnip, onion, and apples, and mix in a bowl. Rinse swiss chard.
Once the other vegetables are prepped, remove the squash from the oven. Slice it in half, remove seeds, and peel. Chop the orange flesh of the squash into small cubes. Place in a baking pan.
Add the remaining chopped vegetables to the baking pan and distribute evenly. Drizzle with olive oil and add a few dashes of each one of the spices, being most careful with the salt. Position the six garlic cloves. Pat the top with butter.
Place in the oven to roast for about 30 minutes.
Entertain yourself with other hobbies and interests for 30 minutes.
Remove the roasted vegetables from the oven and add to a pot with vegetable broth. Tear swiss chard into small pieces and also add. Bring to a low simmer.
Allow the soup to simmer for one hour, stirring occasionally. Again, find something to entertain yourself with during this time.
Turn the stove off and allow the soup to cool. If you have time, place it in the fridge overnight. Otherwise, blend it upon room temperature.
Pour the blended soup back into the pot. Warm while adding more cinnamon, pumpkin spice, s, p, or even roasted red pepper flakes to taste.
Serve one or more servings immediately. Place at least one serving in the fridge so that the flavors can meld and it will become an even better soup in 24 hours. Place remaining servings in the freezer so that it'll last, and the flavors can meld, and it will also become an even better soup.
Take a deep breath. Be thankful for that breath, every bit of unconditional love in your life, and food that is as good for you as it tastes. Then, enjoy.

remembering vacations

The last time I found myself lying on the beach in a bikini was my birthday this past year. It doesn't happen that often. Firstly, because when I have the chance to travel, I choose to take trips as opposed to vacations. (There's quite the difference.) Secondly, because, um, I'm a bit self-conscious. Anyway...

I have many friends who grew up vacationing on the slopes or in tents with their families, but mine always headed towards warmer climate. Vacation to me meant white beaches, clear waters, and lots of lounging as a result. And until high school, I experienced all of it. Each year, my parents, two siblings, and I spent at least 3 winter days in Florida, the Bahamas, Mexico, or Puerto Rico. We often went to hotels or resorts, though a few times we went on cruises too. Either way, it was such a treat to come back to snowy New York with a tan. Then I got a job (my first at CVS), and have since missed every single one of these family vacations.

I thought I didn't care. Not until I spent some quality time with the beach and ocean while freelancing in Central America did I realize how sadly odd it was to not have my family nearby. I missed our days of tropical R&R. Thankfully, these family vacations will no longer be just memories very soon. This New Year's, in honor of my mom's 50th birthday (she was born on January 2nd), I will be celebrating with my family in Cancún, Mexico. Oh. Yes. I can hardly wait.

While we're on the topic of charity events, let's discuss a few other ways to actively participate in the season of giving. The first that comes to mind is Holly's holiday fundraiser. This year, she has partnered with Emily to raise money for Haiti Medial Mission of Wisconsin, an organization that makes mission trips to Haiti to provide quality healthcare for the area's 45,000 residents. The minimum donation is $10, but the good your donation can do is invaluable.

Or, consider making one 8-year old boy's wish come true. Max is currently battling leukemia and hopes to receive 1,000,000 Christmas cards this year. Join Julie in making this holiday of his a magical one. I'd suggest you also follow do-gooders like WhatGives.com for more charitable opportunities. You can even just go shopping. In the past week, I've donated to City Harvest at my local Duane Reade and participated in the Holiday Book Drive at my local Barnes & Noble. Both were totally easy too; I simply went to pay for my items and made the small differences as I checked out. Be generous because, if nothing else, it feels so good. And save money in other ways with handmade gifts like these.

As Sara said: "Decembers are made for generosity. I love that we bring platefuls of homemade cookies, wrapped in crinkly cellophane, to our neighbors. I love that we dig singles and quarters out of our handbags for those Salvation Army santas stationed on every corner, without a second thought. I love that in the darkest, coldest season, we are asked to be the kindest compassionate we can be, to each other, strangers and friends alike." Hope you're loving it too.

Ahem. SantaCon is also a "non-denominational, non-commercial, non-political & non-sensical Santa Claus convention." Non-perishable food items are collected at the beginning, and adult beverages are enjoyed throughout the day. A portion of the proceeds made at most (if not all) bars are donated to Toys for Tots. As expected, Santa's Helper and I had a wonderfully festive time yesterday.

This time yesterday: I was sitting in my favorite neighborhood café, with an empty cup where a cappuccino once was, surrounded by tables of French speakers. It was wonderful. You're undoubtedly aware of my fascination with French culture, right? In my opinion, French is the most beautiful spoken language in the world. I could very happily listen to it for the rest of my life. I also, for the record, believe that Arabic is the most beautiful written language. But that's neither here nor there... so back to French cuisine. Because that's obviously where I'm going with this.

My knowledge of French food was limited to croissants and chocolate mousse until Jean-Jacques opened up... still, it's hardly an authentically French café. It was only when I surprised Marie with a 3-week visit to France that I was really introduced to French wines, cheeses, desserts, breads, and pastries.

Meals too. Marie's mom made a list of classic Parisian dishes and served us a different one each night. When we spent a weekend on the French Riviera, her aunt did the same thing so that we could also get a taste for Southern French cooking as well. I know, I know... they were incredible hosts. I ate so well.

During that first visit, I also picked up on a few French habits: buying fresh bread every other day, planning meals around market vegetables, drinking a glass of wine with lunch and dinner, preparing meals simply from whole ingredients, and serving them in at least three courses (a.k.a. dessert twice a day).

My dad doesn't seem to share the same affection for French food as I do. As much as he insists on eating the highest quality, he also demands big portions, and plates at French restaurants are most often reasonably sized. But because he loves me so, he agreed to take me to Le Bistro D'á Côté on a recent lunch date of ours.

We each had the prix-fixe lunch. To drink, I had a glass of red wine; he had a beer. To start, I had a green salad; he had a lentil soup. For an entrée, I ordered the Grilled Salmon served with sautéed spinach, French lentils & lemon caper butter; he ordered the Grilled Chicken Paillard served with baby greens & French fries. When it was time for dessert, I opted for chocolate gelato, while he chose vanilla. We both agreed that the meal, (the entire dining experience, actually), was incredible though. I think the French just may have won him over...

If I could blush, I'd be blushing right now. Thank you so, so much to everyone that answered the question on my last post. On that note, if you haven't yet told me why you read Danielle Abroad, please comment below. I'm trying to improve and would greatly appreciate it :). Truth is, I blog for you as much as I blog for me. I certainly enjoy exploring my thoughts through writing, but I also wish to share my personal experiences and discoveries with you--to inspire, to relate, to comfort, to entertain.

Unlike many other bloggers, I can honestly say that my family barely reads my blog. My parents are hardly tech-savvy and spend very little time on the internet. And I am always surprised to hear of friends and acquaintances outside of the blogosphere that read religiously. Maybe it's because I didn't actually announce that I had a blog until about six months into this adventure of ours?

Whatever the reason, it really is all about you. You, and the thrill of understanding our opinions. Now, please hold that thought while I explain...

I spent last week at home while I was sick. Not purposefully, (even though my mom is an amazing caretaker,) but because my brother was home for the holiday and I wanted to spend the weekend with him. Then, when it came time for me to leave, I started to feel more and more under the weather. So I stayed home. I slept a lot, tried my best to work, and enjoyed many a bowl of healing chicken soup. I also acquired a friend crush on Julie of Peanut Butter Fingers.

My blog reading habits have changed so much in four years; I began with healthy living blogs, moved onto food blogs, added in some design, humor, travel, and inspirational blogs... and now read a little of everything. If you're interested, you can take a look at my current blogroll here. While I was sick, I hopped around to a few new blogs too, and found myself enjoying PBFingers.com the most.

As I read through her archives, I stumbled upon a quote from Professor ToughLove that really resonated with me: “Your opinions are valuable, and it’s important that you have them, about all kinds of stuff. But having an opinion means being responsible for understanding it: where that opinion came from, what influenced it, and how much of it is based on what you yourself have learned about the world vs. what parents and pundits are shouting at you.”

Being that I was simultaneously republishing archives of my own, I realized promoting understanding of opinions is exactly what I've been trying to do.

I couldn't agree more with the words of Russell Simmons (yes, I am quoting Russell Simmons): "If you write everything off that seems to foreign to you as 'wack' or 'weird,' you might never see the inspiration that's intended for you. You might not be familiar or comfortable with the world outside your experience, but there's a very good chance that's where your gift is going to come from."

"That's why we must have the courage and conviction to run to the world and embrace all of its inspirations instead of hoping that that energy will somehow find us." And so I seek new places, try new things, and blog all about it.

Last week, on the first morning I woke up without a throat that was killing me, I drove upstate to Hemlock Hill Farms. As you saw in the first photo on this post, my mom was out of milk and half-and-half, and I wanted fresh apples and eggs.

I know, most of the time, neither of us will be able to get such products from a nearby working farm. I'm aware that we often lack the opportunity to first, travel, and then spend enough time in a new city or country to fully appreciate its culture. I am all too familiar with the constant balancing act between an active social life and an active lifestyle. And, let's be honest, my days aren't always good either.

I am not unlike any of you actually... except that I have this blog. And I love the fact that you read it. Thank you, again, for joining me as I navigate my way through life, and sometimes, around the world. P.S. If you haven't already caught on, not feeling well and reading through my own archives made me especially mushy and reflective. It also made me crave comforting childhood breakfasts like Multigrain Cheerios with milk. The coffee alongside it was a just because.

all about blogging

This is probably going to seem random...

As I've said before, I was a blog reader before I ever considered creating one of my own. Then I wanted to, but didn't know where to start. It was only when I realized what a unique experience I'd be having (around the world in 340 days) that I figured I could begin blogging. And even then, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. How could I have predicted that I'd still be blogging 3.5 years later, have friends I'd met through blogging, continue to be inspired by them and other bloggers on a daily basis, and have such fabulous readers such as yourselves?

Two years ago, I lost all my blog posts. Two months ago, I lost my domain name. Today, the blog is finally complete. I've republished every single blog post that had been misplaced. I apologize for confusing you if you're getting them on Google Reader, but maybe you enjoyed rereading them as much as I did? :). Ha, probably not. Still, you should know that even though I can never get so many of your thoughtful comments back, it warms my heart to reflect on them. This is belated, but thank you.

You rock. My analytics tell me that you guys and gals are mainly from the States too, but a large number are also from Canada, the United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Australia, Israel, Qatar, France, Germany, and Finland. Um, that's amazing. Plus, some of you found me by searching "what happened to danielle abroad a nourishing glimpse" which is just about the sweetest thing ever.

crazy, stupid, love life

'Tis the season for illness! My body was no exception this week. Despite some belated TLC, I came down with the annual strep throat. Ick. As a result, the beginning of December has been filled with lots of rest, a bit of medicine, and a two movies... one being Crazy, Stupid, Love. I'm a romantic. It was adorable.

And it reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend during our brunch date at the diner last weekend. We came to conclusion: Every relationship, romantic or not, can be a positive, healthy addition to our lives. The important ones are meant to be anyhow. That's why some people hang around while others simply pass on through, isn't it? These are the kinds of things two girls discuss over fresh coffee, a Greek breakfast wrap, and french toast :). Here's to hoping one of next week's dates turns into something, and not caring one little bit if neither ever do.

I don't know if you've realized this, but in addition to embarking upon "the most wonderful time of the year" we're also in the midst of that frightening holiday season with gift stress, family drama, and empty calories. The horror!

At least we're enjoying spring-like, late fall weather?

In all serious though, I'm excited. I feel secure with where I am personally and professionally. My social calendar is filling up with potlucks and parties. This year (as opposed to the last) I'm feeling especially festive, thankful, and ready.

In order to enjoy everything to the fullest, I'm rededicating myself... to myself. When I get the fun kind of busy, I tend to exercise less, eat out more often, and not get enough sleep. As much as this lifestyle is fine for a short while, it becomes anything but when it lasts for weeks on end. So, here's the plan:

Keep a regular sleep schedule. I like my planner, and my to-do list, and all the productivity that is meant to come from it. Trouble is, when it comes to settling down in the evening, it's tough to slow my mind down from that go-go-go. Enter a book before bed. Although I read regularly, shutting down my computer and opening up my next good read of choice isn't a habit of mine. I've decided to make it one. Reading before bed calms me down and truly prepares my body for sleep. And when I am able to get those solid 7-8 hours, my days are brighter, as is my skin. Just last year, Swedish researchers found that "people deprived of sleep for long periods appear less attractive and more unhealthy than those who are well rested."
Prepare myself (at least) two meals a day. Working from cafés by day and making dinner plans in most evenings means that I too often only make myself breakfast. I wouldn't dream of waiting for oatmeal until I was out and about ;) but I also need to pull in the reigns (reindeer pun intended) on my lunches. I'm usually more than capable of channeling Heidi Swanson and whipping up one of the recipes I'm constantly collecting. As for those days I can't be home around noon, well, I'm pretty sure convenience is why sandwiches were invented. Prioritizing these midday meal options will surely be more beneficial for my health and finances.
Get fresh air on a daily basis. Being that I have the unfortunate desire to become less active in the colder months, I was inspired to write Four Reasons to Stay Active This Winter. Even if it's just taking a walk with my roommate's dog along the East River or around Central Park, I know that being outside and moving makes me happier... and helps me maintain my weight. (There. I said it.) Thankfully, I'm also responsible for reviewing fitness classes for Pravassa. I'm hoping it, along with publicly declaring my goal of 4 classes/week, keeps me accountable.
Only celebrate when celebrating. I am the first person to advocate for plenty of bubbly and sweets this holiday season. With that said, however, there's no real need to open three new bottles of wine in one week, or have three homemade pumpkin scones in one sitting; even if both or either are gifts. Furthermore, prioritizing health and maintaining mindfulness when I'm eating on my own will surely make those many special occasions with family and friends (and drinks and desserts) that much more special.

Happy Cyber Monday, friends. For many, I know that discounted shopping opportunities like this are exciting, but for me, well, I could care less. You see, I've never been big into beautiful things. Beautiful places though... yes, please! I hope this means I'm visually-driven and artistic rather than completely superficial.

I just cannot get enough natural beauty or that of architecture, photography, dance, art museums, design, and the culinary arts. These aesthetic forms delight and inspire me, and unseen ones often help determine my next destination. It should be no surprise then that Greece often tops this "beautiful places to go" list.

It was the Ancient Greeks that first defined beauty as pure, simple, and symmetrical. Since then, the word has been shaped and reshaped by culture so that it is not only seen as a quality of perfection, but also imperfection. (Remember the Japanese ideal of wabi sabi?) Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. Still, there is one aspect that seems to have remained consistent throughout the world: the connection between aesthetic appeal and well being.

I began this year with my healthiest resolution and these words, "Is it a coincidence that when I look back on the happiest parts of my life, they're also the times in which I looked and felt my best? I think not." Hippocrates, a Greek doctor, teacher, and "father of medicine," would probably agree with me. He believed in treating the body as a whole and that optimum health would be reached through a proper diet, fresh air, good hygiene, and plenty of exercise. Most, if not all, Ancient Greeks agreed with him on that last part; exercise had become a physical activity to reflect their belief in the beauty of the human form.

Of course, I am no health evangelist. I believe that seeking pleasure is equally as important as maintaining optimal health. And for that, I look towards another school of thought originating in Ancient Greece. Epicuris, an atomic materialist, believed pleasure to be the greatest good. He believed you attain the greatest good in living modestly, gaining knowledge of how the world works, and limiting one's desires. These days, epicureanism has been misinterpreted to mean a love of enjoyments, especially good food and drink. As for my personal understanding and practice, it falls somewhere between these two extremes.

Each day, I combine Hippocrates' philosophy on health with an adaptation of Epicuris' philosophy on pleasure as I strive for "good living." And according my favorite authentic Greek Yogurt, FAGE, good living is actually a Greek tradition. Interesting. Apparently, in spite of my attempt to combine all the yummy philosophies I've acquired throughout my travels and life experience, those from this beautiful country I've never actually seen seem to have resonated the most.

The best way to enjoy life is to keep oneself intellectually stimulated and physically satisfied, and that, my friends, just may be the most beautiful thing of all.

Thanksgiving has always been my absolute favorite holiday.

It's not because of its pleasant historical beginnings, no matter how factual or inaccurate. It's not because of the morning Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, or the afternoon NFL football game, or the following Black Friday.

It's not even because of the food... although I do adore baked brie, crusty french bread, oven roasted turkey, crisp green beans, fresh cranberries, sweet potatoes, braised cabbage, my aunt's salad, my mom's stuffing, and my sister's apple pie.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because of what it means: a day spent with family and loved ones, a day to remind us that it matters not what we want for Christmas (in my case), nor hope for in the New Year, but what we already have.

I literally jumped out of bed with glee this past Thanksgiving day. I made myself breakfast, helped my roommates prepare for their own dinner with friends, toasted to being thankful with champagne, met my family across town for our annual Thanksgiving feast, came back to my apartment just in time for dessert and Buzzword, and wrapped up the night with dancing at a bar a few blocks away.

These past few years haven't just been plentiful in uncertainties, but in pure joy, exciting opportunities, and inspiring support too. Even if I were to focus on recognizing life's generosity each and every day, it still probably wouldn't be enough. So, like Jess, I took Seth's Thanksgiving words to heart:

A great way to give thanks...

for the privileges we've got, is to do important work.

Your job, your internet access, your education, your role in a civilized society... all of them are a platform, a chance to do art, a way for you to give back and to honor those that enabled you to get to this point.

For every person reading this there are a thousand people (literally a thousand) in underprivileged nations and situations that would love to have your slot. Don't waste it.

Whether or not you are an American that recognizes this favorite holiday of mine, I hope you will be able to take something away from them as well.

top cities to travel to

Happy Thanksgiving, friends. I have a little something for you:

Quite a few days ago, the lovely Rose commented: "Danielle, you've been to so many cities. I feel like I want to see a top 5 list from you sometime. I want to know your favorite (for suggestions on where to go!)" The complimentary advice was very much appreciated because, to be honest, such a post idea had never occurred to me before. On principal, I choose not to compare places. I believe that each city, community, and country has at least one uniquely special characteristic to it, and who am I to say that some are worth discovering more than others?

That being said, having become well-versed in the journalistic world, I know that readers like lists, guides, and tips, and I do understand why. So, fine ;). To give the world a special thanks for hosting my adventures across it in these past few years, I will try my absolute best to potentially inspire your next trip...

Most recently, I read the 10 healthiest cities for women by Self magazine. According to it, the healthiest eaters are in Santa Barbara. It didn't surprise me. Santa Barbara is so overwhelmingly beautiful, in part, because of it's nearly perfect climate, clean beaches, rich soil and vibrant flora--all aspects which encourage agriculture and healthy produce year-round. Furthermore, it's located in Southern California, a region known for it's unapologetic vanity and early embracement of the organic lifestyle. I wouldn't ever choose to live in Santa Barbara because I found it almost too manicured (even the buildings adhere to strict aesthetic rules), but I certainly understand the appeal. And I commend their healthy eating habits, of course. I'd love to return one day to explore the dining scene more.

Within The Daily Beast's best cities for College Grads, I was thrilled to find Madison, Wisconsin listed as the second. It's reasons included Money Magazine listing it as one of the best places to live and Forbes noting it as the city with the least amount of unemployment and largest number of residents with Ph.D.s. It failed to mention, however, how generally awesome Madison is. The Mad City is naturally beautiful thanks to it's location between Lake Monona and Lake Mendota while also being culturally strong as a result of its various restaurants, shops, and artistic attractions. It has Midwestern charm, convenient proximity to cities like Chicago and rural towns with farm tours, and Holly. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and look forward to a reason to go back.

Then there's New York City. I have yet to discover another American city that is as famously celebrated as it is despised. I believe Broke-Ass Stuart put it best when he wrote, "She's not the one that got away, she's the one you never had the chance of getting, and that's what makes just being near her so exhilarating. There's a quote from Thomas Wolfe that goes something like, 'One belongs to New York instantly; one belongs to it as much in five minutes as in five years.' And I think old Mr. Wolf was onto something . . . Anything you could ever want is here, as long as you're willing to work for it and know where to look. Magic happens on a daily basis; the hard part is finding time to take it all in." It is a city unlike any other, and I say that with no bias whatsoever. It's no wonder it topped the list of Forbes' America's Most Entertaining Cities. There is a seemingly endless list of opportunities in every area of life; Almost too much, but not. I believe that every single person could find a happy place here, though I also completely understand why some would not want to. For as much as I've been loving life in Manhattan, I know I could never stay forever. Still, please do dine here when you visit/stay.

I cannot wait to have experiences in each of the countries included on my friend Nomadic Matt's Cheap Places to Travel on the US Dollar, but having been to three of the seven, I'd have to say I recommend Hungary the most. I didn't see as much of the country as I one day hope to, but I fell in love with Budapest. Eastern Europe gets a lot less attention than Western Europe, but it's history is just as rich, it's architecture is just as beautiful, and it's cuisines is just as exciting. Budapest was gorgeous in a different way than I'd ever seen before. And having the opportunity to stay with my neighbor's family allowed me to enjoy the kind, soft spoken Hungarian hospitality first hand. It's wonderful, really, and obviously notably more inexpensive than other nearby destinations.

Today I stumbled upon Travel and Leisure's World's Best Cities. I can't imagine taking all the world's cities and rating them against each other, but somehow Istanbul and Barcelona are in the top 10, and I simply cannot argue with that. Istanbul is a sprawling city at the juxtaposition of three of the world's largest religions, with more influences that it somehow knows just how to deal with. It's hectic yet devastatingly enchanting. My one qualm is that come nightfall, I did feel uncomfortable as a woman. I didn't feel outwardly threatened nor disrespected, but it was bizarre to know that you're the only female in a restaurant of dozens of diners. Speaking of machismo, though, let's talk Spain. Barcelona is one of the most fun cities I've ever been to. I'd quickly go again at a moments notice, despite having received my fair share of catcalls. The city boasts distinctly magnificent architecture, in addition to fantastic Spanish food and nightlife. And I have to admit, I find the Catalan language to be yet another fascinating aspect. There are so many reasons why these two cities deserve their "best world city" statuses.

As far as cities that aren't given enough credit, in my opinion, many of them are located on the South American continent. Travelers flock to Peru for it's "natural, cultural, and human legacy," but I'd encourage Ecuador for those same reasons. Cuenca is a gorgeous colonial city and the perfect jumping off point to explore the country's mountains, beaches, and rain forest further. Many gravitate to Brazil and Argentina for tireless excitement and beautiful people against glittering scenery, but I'd urge a stay in Chile as well. Santiago is a vibrant capital city with so much to offer the senses and mind. Being that the culture is somewhat more low-key, I also found it to be an easier cultural adjustment. Moreover, it's worth mentioning that those traveling from Santiago have an incredibly easy commute to amazing beaches, wine country, dessert, mountains, and Patagonia.

What about the spectacular cities of Vietnam, South Africa, Japan, and Egypt? Well, I haven't been to any of them yet, but I can assure you they're all at the top of my must-go-soon list. I also hope to make my way to Reykjavik, Vancouver, St. Petersburg, and Charleston, South Carolina in the next few years. Are there still cities I haven't gotten enough of too? Yes. My affection for Paris, for example, is everlasting. Perhaps one day my dream of living in the City of Lights will come true. Until then, I'm content with basking in the delicate beauty of the French language and cafe culture at Le Moulin a Cafe, my current favorite neighborhood find.

I am bubbling over with gratitude for this wonderfully small world and all the amazing people, places, and things within it; many of the reasons this warm, fuzzy (delicious) holiday is my favorite. Once again, Happy Thanksgiving.

I hardly ever dine out on the weekends. But this past weekend, I found myself with dinner plans across Manhattan on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. With the promise of great food and even better company, I just couldn't resist...

I literally just read this tweet: "Mexican food is unbelievably regionalized. To call one city 'the kitchen of Mexico' is inaccurate, there are a nearly a dozen." I couldn't agree more, despite the fact that I'm not sure to what/whom Adam Goldberg was responding. I also believe it's undeniable that the majority of Americans adore Mexican food, no matter what version they're accustomed to.

My dad, on the other hand, rarely seeks out Mexican restaurants. He was born in the countryside of Jalisco, one of the 31 states of Mexico, and is often disappointed in the adaptations of his native cuisine. It should also be noted that he's the kind of person who only believes things are great if he likes them. If he doesn't like something, it's obviously just bad. I get my affinity for exotic flavor from my mom.

Anyway, now that you know all the important information :) the point... I've been meeting my dad for lunch in my neighborhood about once a week since he's been conveniently working nearby. I love being able to spend one-on-one time with him (and expand on my Upper East Side palate.) This past Friday, I insisted we try Cascabel, one of the highest rated Mexican restaurants in the area.

For whatever reason, we ended up at their sister restaurant, Cantina de Cascabel, instead. Thoughts? Guacamole, mediocre. Hot sauce, fantastic. Baja Fish tacos, perfect. My dad didn't love their Pollo Chipotle Burrito, but he was thrilled they were serving Captain Lawrence, and at happy hour prices.

Thanks for being open minded enough to treat me to the casual, Southern California-style Mexican lunch, Dad. I cannot, cannot wait to share a more authentic meal when we're in Mexico at the end of December.

a homecooked meal

Hey, guess what? I cook. I'm just not that great at it, and hardly ever create edibles as beautiful as those eaten outside the walls of my apartment, so I most often prefer to tell you about the fabulous meals I have at restaurants "around the world." But today, today, I thought I'd share two recent creations from my own kitchen. I don't want you to get the wrong idea and think I live an extravagant lifestyle of non-stop wining, dining, and traveling. I can assure you, I do not :).

This fall has been an interesting one weather-wise. It's been rainy and cold, then warm and sunny, and rainy and cold again. My recent cravings have been a product of such craziness. A few days ago, I made myself a spicy minestrone soup. I immediately enjoyed a big bowl of healthful swiss chard, tomatoes, chickpeas, string beans, onions, white beans, and whole wheat penne, in addition to garlic and red chile pepper. Then I placed 2 servings in the fridge, and froze the rest.

I love how soup can be saved, and how it gets better with each passing day. For that very reason actually, the following evening I prepared a quinoa dish. It was super easy too--I just added chopped spinach and leftover chickpeas to a Quinoa Blend by Near East (former HLS swag). And there you have it, the limits of my culinary talents. I could probably be more creative, but when cooking for myself, I really only strive for simplicity, flavor, and nutrition... alongside a glass of wine.

upgrading to a purple passport

I've been working for The Purple Passport for nearly a month now. And being that it's going extremely well, I wanted to tell you so :). I'm learning more and more about what it takes to create the exciting city guides that feature "the finest hotels, restaurants, nightlife, spas, shops, sights, cultural venues, and other notable spots in the world." I'm thoroughly enjoying my responsibilities, as well as completely enjoying the company of my coworkers when I see 'em.

Although I work remotely most of the time, getting to know them slowly but surely has been wonderful. Most have lived abroad before (if not at that time being) and understand and appreciate what it is to enjoy real, authentic food. And all are passionate about travel, obviously.

The two that I most often spend office days have spent a considerable amount of time in Asia and have been teaching me a lot about Japanese cuisine during our lunch breaks. Trying oden (a light Japanese stew) and a green tea mille-feuille (a French puff pastry with green tea cream) have been an absolute delight.

We've also been occasionally meeting at cafés, public libraries, or hotel lounges. A habit of which I've fully been practicing solo as well.

My favorite part about being a part of The Purple Passport though, is knowing how uniquely special it is. Unlike many "travel guides" that read dry and boring, TPP is fun, pithy, and honest. a date with sausalito

Last year, a stranger invited me to be his date to a wedding in Paris. I was caught off guard, I didn't know how to respond, I became overwhelmed with all the reasons why I shouldn't take him up on the offer. I missed the opportunity.

This year, a stranger invited me to spend a late afternoon with him in Sausalito. I just happened to be at the Ferry Building picking up a vegan Pumpkin Pie Scary Spice donut from Pepples Donuts. The ferry to Sausalito was leaving in only 20 minutes, from a dock about 20 yards away. Most of my friends had already left San Francisco and I had 6+ hours before my own plane took off.

This time around, I accepted the spontaneity. It went a little something like this...

...a drink beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, a drive into the mountains to watch the sun set over the Pacific Ocean, a Vietnamese pho dinner, and a ride back to San Francisco. I'm convinced: It's almost always worth taking an unexpected chance.

Last Monday, I was bleary-eyed. The redeye flight from San Francisco left me beyond exhausted and it wasn't until this past Saturday that I finally felt well-rested again. This morning, on the other hand, I awoke naturally at 6:30am. I can't remember the last time that happened. 'Twas nice.

But since we're speaking of San Francisco :) we can do one last Foodbuzz recap, right? I sure hope so, because the Farewell Brunch was an amazing highlight.

I doubted I'd even make it as I'd gone out the night before, but once Sunday morning came along, I couldn't even consider not going...

there were too many bright, shining faces to see, and sadly say goodbye too. I had the pleasure of sitting with Courtney, Gina, Courtney, Shannon, and more.

The brunch was set up buffet style with quite the selection. Before heading for the food though, I chose to quench my thirst by serving myself a cup of Godiva coffee, and ordering a necessary Bloody Mary alongside a glass of water.

Then, I stocked my plate with challah french toast, goat cheese frittata, scrambled eggs, fruit, a spoonful of granola, and my favorite, Sinhi Breakfast Daal (curry roasted cauliflower and crispy almond slivers). And I had seconds. Delicious.

After a flurry of an exchange of business cards and goodbyes, I met up with a friend of mine to walk ~~off the indulgent brunch I'd just had~~ through the city.

It was so great to see those neighborhoods I'd wandered through the year before again. We even stopped inside the quaint (and free) trolley museum,

where I couldn't resist the touristy photo. Later on in the day, I had an even more spontaneous adventure, but I think I'll save that photographic medley for another time. It's worth the wait, I promise.

P.S. Above is the one worthwhile photo from that gala dinner I'd been so unbelievably excited about. For as fun as it was to get dressed up, and as cool as it was to watch Tyler Florence on stage, I was unenthused with everything but dessert. No matter what, I think I'll always love a San Francisco trio.

foodbuzzing at the farmers market

This morning I stopped by my local farmers market. I filled my bag to the brim with apples, butternut squash, carrots, lettuce, parsnips, and an onion, all for under $10. It was bittersweet though. Over the next few months, produce options will decrease as the temperature does the same. Farewell summer's bounty.

And yet, even now, the local fruits and vegetables I was able to choose from here in New York are limited compared to those in California. Last Saturday morning, I left Foodbuzz HQ to meet Melissa, Bobbi, Mara, and Diana at the Ferry Building. Although I enjoyed wandering through, the farmers market was my favorite part:

What I wouldn't do for options like that year-round! Though I suppose I'd have to move to Los Angeles for that :). Either way, I'm so glad I had the chance to gawk over the California-grown grapes, potatoes, greens, squash, heirloom beans, and peppers, and enjoy my first sweet slice of persimmon.

Afterwards, we walked over to the craft fair across the street, and then headed to the Metreon. More Foodbuzz Festival wining and dining ahead...
